System SKG
System SKG™ (Synchronous Key Generator) is a method that handles security keys in closed enviroments with well-defined communicating parties. It synchronously generates (SHA-1 algorithm, FIPS 180-1) identical 256-bit keys in physically separated locations and is by that a symmetric way to control security.
The synchronisation is established by a non time-based protocol called BYSKYBA.
The keys created by the SKG™ is then used for authentication and encryption. Typical areas of use is in communications between a client and a server, a bank and its customer and in an email communication etc.
The SKG™ offers multiple separate key channels in one unit (SmartCard or USB-dongle) for multi functionality and single sign-on situations. By giving each node the same condition (Seed) and where each node has its own unique Id, it is possible to generate exactly the same key on each side. It's not necessary for the nodes to "know" the exact seed to make sure that the same seed is used at both nodes. From this seed, the SKG™ then calculates the sequence of dynamic keys.
SKG™ is a symmetric way of handling keys in closed environments and therefore it’s easy to distribute the seed. For instance, a bank can easily "dope" a customer’s credit card when it is distributed. Once the SKG™ is set up the nodes generates new keys on demand. It’s a good rule to generate new keys session-wise. SKG™ never uses old keys. In order for SKG to that the next key that is to be created is identical on each node, there is a synchronisation protocol used called BYSKYBA.
